Germany intensifies security at ‘Jewish sites’
Merz explained that diplomatic measures had failed to persuade Iran to discontinue its nuclear program — a program Iran maintains is meant for civilian use — and described Israeli strikes as a defensive move to keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
On Friday, Israel struck numerous Iranian military and nuclear sites, killing senior commanders and veteran nuclear scientists. Iran responded by launching missile attacks against Israel in retaliation.
“It’s a precaution to protect Jewish sites in Germany in case Iran decides to attack them,” Merz told journalists on Sunday. He demanded Iran “immediately cease its attacks on civilians in Israel.” However, Merz made no similar appeal to Israel, insisting it was acting in self-defense.
He also revealed that Israel has asked Germany for firefighting equipment, and the delivery is being facilitated promptly.
Germany’s move comes after France announced a similar boost in protective measures for Jewish and US sites within its borders. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau described the move as a precaution against “acts of aggression by a hostile power.”
According to Human Rights Activists, Israeli strikes have left 406 people dead and injured 654 in Iran, while Iran’s attacks have resulted in 13 deaths in Israel, according to Magen David Adom.
