London Mayor Backs Starmer’s Refusal to Join Strikes on Iran

(MENAFN) London Mayor Sadiq Khan stated on Saturday that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer was correct to resist pressure from US President Donald Trump to participate in military strikes against Iran, according to reports.

“Keir Starmer is right to resist pressure from US President Donald Trump to join strikes on Iran,” Khan said in a social media statement.

Khan characterized the conflict as a “war of choice” with the potential to cause “needless killing and suffering abroad” while also imposing significant economic repercussions on the United Kingdom. He emphasized that Britain should refrain from joining US-led military action, warning that such involvement could worsen the cost-of-living pressures already affecting households.

Earlier, Starmer defended the government’s decision not to participate in the US-Israel strikes, stating that the preferred approach is “a negotiated settlement with Iran, where they give up their nuclear ambitions.”

“My focus is on providing calm, level-headed leadership in the national interest,” the prime minister added, emphasizing the importance of “having the strength to stand firm by our values and our principles no matter the pressure to do otherwise.”
