Prime Minister Janša at the Crimea Platform Summit: Slovenia Stands with Ukraine
SLOVENIA, September 24 - The summit, held on the margins of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, was attended by representatives of more than 60 countries, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the keynote speaker.
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Janez Janša stressed that its title, A Test of Unity, a Call for Action, aptly captures the decision facing the international community.
"Sovereignty. Territorial integrity. The prohibition on the acquisition of territory by force. These principles must not depend on a country’s geographical location, size or power. They must apply equally to all," the Prime Minister stressed, adding that the United Nations was established precisely to safeguard these principles and that the issue of Crimea therefore extends far beyond Ukraine’s borders.
Slovenia has consistently supported Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders. It also pays particular attention to the situation of the population in the occupied territories, political persecution, Russification, the deportation and forcible transfer of Ukrainian children, and security in the Black Sea.
"For Slovenia, this means continuing to support Ukraine in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity. It means political, military, humanitarian and financial assistance. It means maintaining pressure on Russia, pursuing accountability for violations of international law, and rejecting all attempts to normalise the occupation or territorial conquest," Prime Minister Janez Janša pointed out.
Slovenia advocates freedom and safety of navigation in the Black Sea and the protection of Ukraine’s export infrastructure. In its view, the international community must uphold the fundamental principle of international law that borders cannot be changed by force.
Slovenia will continue its political, military, humanitarian and development support for Ukraine, as well as its support for Ukraine’s European path. The objective remains a just and lasting peace based on the UN Charter and international law, with Ukraine itself taking part in decisions concerning its future.
"Slovenia stands with Ukraine. Crimea is Ukraine," the Prime Minister stressed at the summit.
