EU Foreign Policy Chief Condemns Houthi Attack on Riyadh Airport

(MENAFN) European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas condemned the latest Houthi attack on Riyadh’s international airport on Sunday, describing it as an “appalling act of terror” and expressing support for Saudi Arabia following the deadly incident.

"The Houthi attack on Riyadh’s international airport is an appalling act of terror. There can be no justification for indiscriminate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure," Kallas wrote on X.

She also expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and extended her "deepest" condolences to the families of those killed in the attack.

Kallas said EU foreign ministers would discuss the escalating regional tensions on Monday, as concerns grow over the security of civilian facilities and the potential for further violence.

She stressed the importance of closer maritime security cooperation between European and regional forces operating around the Red Sea.

"Enhanced coordination between the EU’s Red Sea naval operation Aspides and the Saudi-led Multinational Maritime Defence Coalition is vital," she added.

According to Saudi civil aviation authorities, the airport attack killed four Saudi nationals, two Bangladeshi citizens and one person each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan.

Those injured in the incident were taken to hospitals for treatment, with some reported to be in critical condition. Authorities have not provided further details about the total number of people wounded.

Airport operations were temporarily suspended after the attack while officials assessed the damage and checked the safety of the facilities. The closure disrupted air travel, and passengers were advised to contact their airlines before traveling to the airport.

Kuwait Airways also canceled its Saturday flights to Riyadh, along with the corresponding return services, citing the airport shutdown.

The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions following a series of Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi airports and other facilities in recent days. The latest strike has intensified concerns about civilian safety, the protection of critical infrastructure and the broader security implications for the Red Sea region.
